Roger started in 2025 as a Junior Group Leader at the Spanish National Cancer Research Center (CNIO) in Madrid, Spain.
In 2020, he joined Dr. Todd Yeates' lab at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) as a postdoctoral fellow, applying protein design to create novel protein cages as imaging scaffolds for studying small proteins (<50 kDa) using cryo-electron microscopy (cryo-EM), and designing new protein assemblies with AI tools. Later, Roger expanded his expertise in Dr. Jose Rodriguez’s lab at UCLA, focusing on structural biology methods for studying emerging pathogens.
Roger earned his Ph.D. degree in 2019 from the John Innes Centre (JIC) - University of East Anglia (UEA) in Norwich, UK, supported by the prestigious John Innes Foundation fellowship, under the mentorship of Dr. George Lomonossoff. His research focused on unraveling the intricate conformational changes during the maturation cycle of a eukaryotic virus, utilizing advanced structural biology techniques, including high-resolution cryo-EM, in collaboration with Dr. Jack Johnson at The Scripps Research Institute. During his Ph.D., he also rotated through Dr. Alison Smith’s lab at JIC, studying starch synthesis in wheat grains, and Dr. Sophien Kamoun’s lab at The Sainsbury Laboratory, exploring host vesicular trafficking and gene editing in plants.
He graduated with a degree in Biotechnology in 2015 from the Autonomous University of Barcelona (UAB) in Spain. During this time, he conducted research on plant transposable elements in Dr. Pep Casacuberta’s lab at the Centre for Research in Agricultural Genomics (CRAG) in Spain. He also held research internships at the University of Zurich in Switzerland with Dr. Simon Krattinger, and at the Ludwig-Maximilian University of Munich in Germany with Dr. Bettina Bölter, studying wheat disease resistance genes and chloroplast membrane proteins. These internships were supported by the prestigious Biology Undergraduate Summer School Fellowship and the Amgen Scholars European Programme Fellowship.
Roger has a deep love for music, having previously played in a rock band and currently performing in a saxophone quartet. Outside the lab, he also enjoys outdoor adventures, hiking, camping, running, and exploring diverse cuisines.
